Care Patterns in Medicare and Their Implications for Pay for Performance

Policymakers are considering implementing pay for performance on a large scale in the fee-for-service Medicare programs. Pay for Performance demonstrations targeting physician practices are under way and Congress recently passed legislation authorizing payment for physicians who report on quality of care.
